Sales and Marketing

Marketing as a function is considered to be the most important for any business organization. Marketing professionals thus play a very important role and are the backbone of the organization. Students who choose to specialize in marketing will focus on how to acquire customers and promote their products/services. This path can be very attractive for students who have characteristics like communication/ presentation skills, convincing skills and an extrovert persona by nature.

What really does the Sensex measure?

The Sensex, first developed as a share price index for the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in 1986, is aimed at capturing the overall level of prices in the market based on 30 of the largest, most liquid and representative scrips available on the BSE. While it is a price index, what it really measures is the free float market capitalisation of its 30 constituent scrips in relation to the base period of 1978-79, which is equated to 100.





What does market capitalisation mean?

It is simply the value of all the shares that a company has at the current market price. In other words, it is the price of each share multiplied by the total number of shares available.



What is free-float?

The free-float of a scrip is the proportion of total shares issued by the concerned company that is readily available for trading in the market. It excludes the promoters' holding, governments holding, strategic holding and other locked-in shares that will not normally be available for trading in the market. In essence, the free-float is the proportion of a companys shares that is readily available for buying or selling.



What are the advantages of using free-float market capitalisation for the Sensex?

Since the idea behind the Sensex essentially is to capture the movement of the market, it makes more sense to look at shares that are actually available for trading than all the shares of a company. For instance, consider a situation in which the share prices of company A and B both increase by Rs 10 on two different days. Now assume that company A has one crore shares whereas company B has two crore shares. If total market capitalisation were taken into account, the day on which company A's price moved up would have increased market capitalisation by Rs 10 crore, whereas on the other day the increase would have been Rs 20 crore. The Sensex should then increase more sharply on the latter occasion. Now suppose that only 10% of company B's stocks are in free-float, while 40% of company As are on free-float. In that case, on the day that company B's price moved up by Rs 10, only 20 lakh shares available for trading would have seen a price increase that the market could take advantage of. In company A's case, on the other hand, as many as 40 lakh tradable shares would feel the impact. Clearly, for the market the latter is more of an impact.



Are the 30 scrips always the same?

Not at all. There are constant revisions as some scrips become more liquid or become among the ones with the highest market capitalisations and so on. In the current year itself, for example, L&T moved out of the Sensex in May with Maruti Udyog Ltd coming in to replace it. Later, in September, L&T was back as part of the Sensex, replacing MTNL.



Who decides which scrips will comprise the Sensex?

The Bombay Stock Exchange has an Index Committee consisting of a mix of academicians, fund managers from leading mutual funds, journalists, market participants, independent governing board members, and the exchange administration. The responsibility of keeping the Sensex in tune with the changing reality of the market lies with this committee, which has laid down quantitative and qualitative criteria to use in deciding when to exclude or include a particular scrip. The committee meets every quarter to review the Sensex as well as the Bombay Stock Exchange's other indices, though changes need not result from every meeting. When the committee does decide on a change, it announces six weeks before the actual replacement which scrip or scrips will go out and which will come in to replace them.

Gilchrist fires but Sri Lanka get consolation win

Adam Gilchrist provided the fireworks but Sri Lanka's seamers had the extinguisher at the MCG, where Australia's blistering start of 0 for 107 in the 15th over somehow turned into their first loss in nearly three weeks. Chasing 222 Australia were cruising as Gilchrist belted 83 from 50 balls, but a collapse of 6 for 16 in ten overs ensured Sri Lanka regained some pride with a 13-run win.
It almost turned back Australia's way as Nathan Bracken and Brett Lee combined for a 35-run tenth-wicket stand that brought them within sight of victory, but Sanath Jayasuriya had one final trick in his last match on Australian soil. With 14 needed from two overs, Jayasuriya, who had not been handed the ball until then, came on and bowled Lee (37) first ball to seal the win.
The result did not mean anything - Sri Lanka are still flying home on Saturday and Australia are safely in the finals - but it did highlight why some fans will miss the tri-series, despite its tired format. Australia wanted to enter the deciders with winning momentum, but they were also keen to get some chasing practice after batting first in all but the series-opening wash-out. On the strength of their middle-order efforts, Ricky Ponting will be hoping to win the toss in the finals.
Admittedly MCG pitches have been hard to bat on all season, but the way Gilchrist was going it looked like this surface was friendlier. When he fell, it became a minefield. Ishara Amerasinghe and Nuwan Kulasekera, previously fodder for Gilchrist's cannon, turned into snipers and clinically picked off his team-mates.
Michael Clarke was bowled by Amerasinghe for 0 from 11 balls, Ponting was lbw to Kulasekera for 1 from 11, Andrew Symonds feathered a leg-side catch behind off Amerasinghe for 0 and Lasith Malinga had Brad Haddin lbw for 7. When Michael Hussey was bowled by a ripping inswinger from Chamara Kapugedera for 5, they were still 80 short and the tail could not save them.
A brave gambler could have had huge odds on the result after Gilchrist's quick start in his final game at the MCG. His first 17 balls brought only 9 but he raced to his half-century from 35 deliveries, bringing up the milestone with a vicious square cut for four off Malinga. Fourteen came from that over but Malinga was fortunate compared to Amerasinghe. Gilchrist picked up 18 off Amerasinghe's second over, launching fours over mid-off and midwicket, pulling a six forward of square and then running four more when his well-timed drive over cover strangely pulled up.
The Sri Lankans gave Gilchrist a guard of honour as he came to the crease - Brad Hogg, Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan received the same gesture from their respective opponents - and they must have been thankful they will never again be subjected to his power. It took an awesome catch to deny Gilchrist triple-figures as Malinga ran around from long-off and clutched a diving chance to give Kulasekera his first wicket.
There was no doubt about Gilchrist's dismissal but his opening partner James Hopes, who made 28, fell in bizarre circumstances when Muralitharan's doosra brushed the off stump. The bail took so long to dislodge that there was confusion over how it fell, but replays eventually confirmed Hopes was bowled. That was the moment that sparked Australia's collapse, and they must have wished their target was smaller.
It easily could have been. Sri Lanka stumbled to 3 for 42 but Australia appeared content to let Sri Lanka knock up a competitive total and test their chasing abilities. Bracken finished with 4 for 29 from his ten overs, but three of those came in the dying stages and it was not until the final ball of the 50th over that the visitors were dismissed for 221. They had Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan to thank for their fightback.
Dilshan batted sensibly, taking the easy runs on offer when the field pushed back and striking only three boundaries in his 62. He had late support from Chamara Silva, whose 35 was his highest score in a forgettable tournament. Silva and Dilshan added 60 for the sixth wicket after Dilshan and Jayawardene had combined for 64 for the fifth. Jayawardene's 50 from 66 balls featured a couple of cracking cover-drives to the boundary and he launched Mitchell Johnson over long-on for four more.
There was not a great deal for Sri Lanka to cheer early in their innings, and the crowd's biggest reaction was saved for a crash between Dilruwan Perera and the bowler Lee. Perera was trying for a quick single, dropped his bat and could not regain his feet, forcing him to comically stumble and crawl towards the crease where he slammed his hand in safe ground just before Symonds' throw hit the stumps.
Moments like that hinted that the dead-rubber might not be totally forgettable and the later feats of Gilchrist and Sri Lanka's bowlers turned it into one of the tournament's most memorable games. It was also proof that what occurs on the field can be just as entertaining as what happens off it, a point that Australia and India should remember leading into the finals.

Sujatha - Complete profile

Sujatha (May 3, 1935 - Feb 27, 2008, Aged: 72) was the pseudonym of the Tamil writer S. Rangarajan, author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular writers in Tamil literature. He was also a contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He has a wide readership, served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.
An engineer by profession, he supervised the design and production of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) during his tenure in Bharat Electronics which is currently used in elections throughout India.

Sujatha (Rangarajan) was born in Triplicane, Chennai but spent his childhood in Srirangam near Tiruchirapalli under the care of his paternal grandmother owing to the frequent transfers of his father in his job.

Education
His schooling was in Srirangam. He attended St.Joseph's College, Trichy, where he was classmate with Abdul Kalam (who later became the President of India). Sujatha graduated in the 1954 class with a B.Sc in Physics (1952-54) and masters degree in Electronics from the Madras Institute of Technology. His writing interests were largely inspired by the short stories and serials published in popular Tamil magazines.

Early Writings
Sriranganthu Devathaigal (Angels of Srirangam) is a series of short stories based on incidents unfolded in that part of the world in 1940's and 50's. Sivaji, a minor magazine from Trichy published a story during his student days. His first short story was published in Kumudam magazine in 1962.

Engineering career
He worked first in Civil Aviation Department of Government of India and later for Bharat Electronics in Bangalore, India before his retirement to Chennai, India, where he lived till his last days. As an engineer, he was a forward thinker and enabled many engineers to think ahead of times. He enabled the development of advanced word processing before the days of personal computers.

Awards
Sujatha received an award from Govt of India's National Council for Science and Technology in 1993 for making Science accessible to the public through his books, magazine contributions and other media.

Style and influence:
Sujatha was a versatile Tamil writer, with several short stories, novels, poems, plays, screenplays for movies, articles in popular science other non-fiction articles, to his credit. Sujatha has written a number of science fiction stories in Tamil and has sought to explain science in very simple terms to a layman. He routinely used to answer science questions in magazines like Junior Vikatan. His science FAQ has been released as separate books called En, Etharku, Eppadi and Athisaya Ulagam by Vikatan publications.
He worked on "Katradhum, petrathum" in Anantha vikatan and "Sujatha Bathilgal" in Kungumam

Interests
His interests include archeology, astrophysics, Biotechnology, neuroscience, Carnatic music, Tamil literature, sociology.

Contribution to Films
Apart from being an author, he has also extended his writing skills and expertise on science to movies. the first of his were gayathiri and priya. In Priya his fictional charecter Ganesh comes to the screen done by superstar Rajinikanth but without vasanth (because the actor who was supposed to play vasanth did not get passport). Kamal Hassan's Vikram, which was written by him. He penned dialogues for the movie 'Roja' (directed by Maniratnam). In recent times he has been associated with Mani Ratnam (for Iruvar, Kannathil Muthamittal, Aayitha Ezhuththu etc) and Shankar (Boys, Anniyan, Indian, Mudhalvan, Sivaji). He was also a co-producer for the banner MediaDreams which went on to produce critically acclaimed bio-pic, Bharathi, of the great Tamil poet Bhaarathiyaar.
He was working on Shankar's Robot before passing away on Feb 27, 2008.

Srilankans fail to make it to the finals

With their last engagement against Australia only of academic interest now, Sri Lanka are certain fly back home with a feeling of under-achievement, particularly with the bat. Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain, said as much after his team suffered a seven-wicket defeat to India in Hobart, ending their hopes of reaching the finals.
"We haven't been consistent and competitive enough, especially with the bat. The batting has to be in really good form. We haven't done that in this series," Jayawardene said of a campaign which produced just one win, against India in a rain-reduced affair in Canberra.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni called correctly at the toss for just the third time in the series and put the opposition in, keeping in mind the windy and slightly overcast conditions in the morning. Sri Lanka lost Dilruwan Perera early on, but Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara showed aggressive intent and capitalised on some erratic bowling from the new-ball pair of Munaf Patel and Ishant Sharma.
But as soon as Irfan Pathan and Praveen Kumar were introduced into the attack, the batsmen stiffened and were unable to work a way out against the tight lines. Perhaps there was an element of complacency on the part of senior Sri Lankan batsmen, who ignored the very lesson they'd been stressing to their younger team-mates, of staying as long as possible at the wicket.
"We knew it was tough in the morning to bat. But again there was another collapse where we lost four wickets quickly and it was difficult to recover," Jayawardene said who described that collapse as the turning point of the match.
A target in the range of 250-275, Jayawardene felt, would've been challenging and he rued the fact that his batsmen could not build on starts. "It's more about confidence. [The] guys were getting out before they got in."
Sri Lanka's ODI fortunes have been sliding after darkness descended on that April evening in Barbados during the World Cup final, and they are still searching for the light. After defeating England by a 1-0 margin in the three-Test home series, they lost the one-day series 3-2. "The standards have come down since the World Cup. In the ODIs, we haven't been consistent all around - we need to find the right formula," Jayawardene said.
Jayawardene worried that the failure of the middle order, a problem against England, has continued in this series. "Good players come out of it, but we seem to be making the same mistakes."
In the months after the World Cup, Sri Lankan cricket has gone through a transition of sorts, with experienced cricketers like Marvan Atapattu and Russell Arnold retiring and younger talent being brought in and Jayawardene called for patience. "We need to be patient with some of the young talent and give them more time and the senior group should take up more responsibility."
Even in defeat, however, Jayawardene didn't forget to congratulate India, whom he felt deserved to be in the finals. "They played good cricket and credit to them for making the finals and we didn't deserve to be there."

Rail Budget 2008-09

Hayden calls Harbhajan obnoxious

The Australian fiery batsman Mathew Hayden has called Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh ‘a little obnoxious weed’.
The gloves are once again off between Indian and Australian cricketers. Both the teams that have locked horns like never before during India’s latest visit to Australia are increasingly attacking the other side on and off the field.
India that today qualified for the tri-series final by easily defeating Sri Lanka meets Australia in the best of three final. Though India has played good cricket during the series but there has been inconsistency in its performance especially its inexperienced batting line up.
While talking on Brisbane radio Monday said “It's been a bit of a long battle with Harbhajan, the first time I ever met him he was the same little obnoxious weed that he is now," Hayden said on Brisbane radio yesterday.”
He added that Harbhajan’s record on the field speaks volumes for itself in cricket.
"There is a certain line that you can kind of go to and then you know where you push it and he just pushes it all the time. That's why he has been charged more than anyone that's ever played in the history of cricket” Hayden went on to add.
India and Australia meet in the best of three one-day final series that is set to begin on Sunday following two months long visit by Indian side.
Harbhajan and Hayden recently exchanged duel during last Sunday's match at the SCG.

Assasination attempts on Fidel Castro

Fabian Escalante, who was long tasked with protecting the life of Castro, has calculated the exact number of assassination schemes and/or attempts by the CIA to be 638. Some such attempts have included an exploding cigar, a fungal-infected scuba-diving suit, and a mafia-style shooting. Some of these plots are depicted in a documentary entitled 638 Ways to Kill Castro.One of these attempts was by his ex-lover Marita Lorenz whom he met in 1959. She subsequently agreed to aid the CIA and attempted to smuggle a jar of cold cream containing poison pills into his room. When Castro realized, he reportedly gave her a gun and told her to kill him but her nerve failed.Castro once said in regards to the numerous attempts on his life, "If surviving assassination attempts were an Olympic event, I would win the gold medal."
According to the Family Jewels documents declassified by the CIA in 2007, one such assassination attempt before the Bay of Pigs invasion involved Johnny Roselli and Al Capone's successor in the Chicago Outfit, Salvatore Giancana and his right-hand man Santos Trafficante. It was personally authorized by then US attorney general Robert Kennedy .
Giancana and Miami Syndicate leader Santos Trafficante were contacted in September 1960 about the possibility of an assassination attempt by a go-between from the CIA, Robert Maheu, after Maheu had contacted Johnny Roselli, a member of the Las Vegas Syndicate and Giancana's number-two man. Maheu had presented himself as a representative of numerous international business firms in Cuba that were being expropriated by Castro. He offered $150,000 for the "removal" of Castro through this operation (the documents suggest that neither Roselli nor Giancana and Trafficante accepted any sort of payments for the job). According to the files, it was Giancana who suggested using a series of poison pills that could be used to doctor Castro's food and drink. These pills were given by the CIA to Giancana's nominee Juan Orta, whom Giancana presented as being an official in the Cuban government who was also in the pay of gambling interests, and who did have access to Castro. After a series of six attempts to introduce the poison into Castro's food, Orta abruptly demanded to be let out of the mission, handing over the job to another, unnamed participant. Later, a second attempt was mounted through Giancana and Trafficante using Dr. Anthony Verona, the leader of the Cuban Exile Junta, who had, according to Trafficante, become "disaffected with the apparent ineffectual progress of the Junta". Verona requested $10,000 in expenses and $1,000 worth of communications equipment. However, it is unknown how far the second attempt went, as the entire program was cancelled shortly thereafter due to the launching of the Bay of Pigs invasion.

A healthy decision - But are we ready for it?

The chennai corporation has been striving hard to make the city a role model for others. It has built many flyovers, roads and has taken efforts to maintain the parks in a good condition. Adding to this, cleanliness is also given a high preference. Recently it has issued an order regarding this.

• A fine of Rs.50 would be imposed for spitting.




• A fine of Rs.100 would be imposed for dropping the garbage in roads.




• A fine of Rs.1000 would be imposed for failure of keeping the surroundings clean.

These rules would come into effect from April1,2008. This sounds nice but has the corporation taken all the steps to implement this rule? Has it provided proper and adequate toilets and garbage boxes?...
Corporation should think about this and make necessary actions to make the city clean and tidy.

Thirteen Australian cricketers have gone under the hammer in the Indian Premier League actions today, with Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds receiving a monster A$1.47 million bid from the Hyderabad team, hours after indicating he would not be available for the concurrent tour of Pakistan.The auctions, taking place in Mumbai, are still underway and will feature 77 international cricketers, with each of the eight Indian franchises having a cap of $5 million for a maximum of eight marquee players each.The officially sanctioned Indian Premier League (IPL) starts on April 18 and will be played over 44 days in eight cities.The top-seller so far is Indian keeper MS Dhoni, who has pulled in a phenomenal $1.5 million for the tournament.Surprisingly Glenn McGrath and key Pakistani batsman Mohammed Yousuf were pitched back into the player pool after neither was able to reach their reserve price.The players to be auctioned off so far are:

The title given above may sound quite peculiar. But u can understand the situation from the title itself. I have been here since my childhood for nearly 19 years. But our area still suffers the curse of lack of transportation facilities. The picture displayed shows the place by the name brindavan nagar. This place is where i can get a bus and is 1 km from my home. The railway station is 2kms from my area. On the otherside velachery bus terminus is also 3kms away.So ultimately people in our area cannot completely rely on public means of transportation. Only three buses (9M,51P,51R) come to brindavan nagar. These buses are not regularly scheduled. Most of the time people need to stand for a longwhile. Authorities concerned with this issue should take some necessary action so that people get benefitted.

The honourable chief minister of Tamilnadu is now 86 years old. He has been elected to assembly several times and has been the chief minister of tamilnadu many times. Even though there are many other talented and young members in his party, he is not ready to give up his throne to the upcoming generation. Many people who have strived hard for the development of the party have gone unidentified even without a low level post in the party. He should rest himself and give chance to others. Moreover he is very keen in raising up his family members to various top notch positions. He is least cared about the true workers of the party.Lets expect a change in the future.

A swiss company has revealed that they have produced world’s first real submersible car, squba, inspires by the 1977 bond movie ‘THE SPY WHO LOVED ME’ Aqua car is stable at a depth of 10m, runs on three electric motors and is powered by rechargeable lithium -ion batteries. It will be a change for all the die hard romantics as they have new places and venues to spend some quality time and isolated time with their dates. Unlike military vehicles, which can only drive slowly on a lake bed, this car can provide a stable “flight” at a depth of 30 feet. The combustion engine from a sports car has been removes and replaced it with several electrical motors. Three are located in the rear, with one providing propulsion on land and the other driving the screw for underwater motoring. Passengers will be able to keep breathing underwater through an integrated tank of compressed air similar to what is used in scuba diving. But they will get wet.



It is a sure bet that the “squba” will steal the show from any ‘Bay watch’ beauty on the beach. And easily, too: You drive the car into the water and the car floats. That is, until you crack the door to let the water in. Immediately the “squba” starts on his way to the underwater world.
